What is CBM?
CBM (cubic metre) is the standard measure of shipment volume in international freight. You calculate it by multiplying a carton’s length × width × height in metres, then multiplying by the number of cartons. Freight forwarders price sea freight on either CBM or weight, whichever is greater, so knowing your CBM is essential for estimating shipping cost and choosing between LCL and a full container.
Which container do I need?
A 20GP holds roughly 28–33 CBM of usable volume, a 40GP around 58–67 CBM, and a 40HQ (high cube) about 68–76 CBM. Below roughly 15 CBM, LCL (less-than-container-load) is usually cheaper than booking a full container. This calculator shows your total volume and the most economical container option automatically.
